Can taking your dog to work decrease workers stress?
Research has been undertaken to show that pets in the workplace can help reduce employers stress levels.
The presence of pets with dogs in particular has been proven to raise morale and and reduce stress levels in workers around them. The US report even showed results that others people's pets helped fellow workers gain higher job satisfaction.
By measuring employees stress levels they proved that workers who brought their pets in had low readings than sample workers who didn't. The same tests were also performed for the same workers when they didn't have their pets in with them and their stress levels rose.
Randolph Barker, VCU School of Business, "The differences in perceived stress between days the dog was present and absent were significant. The employees as a whole had higher job satisfaction than industry norms."
Employees taking part in the research had positive comments, feeling that there was a noticeable rise in moral and reduction in stress.
Stress can be a large contributor to illness at work and potentially can cost a company many working days. Bringing pets into work could be a preventive measure whilst also improving productivity and job satisfaction.
It may be a stretch having hundreds of dogs in a large office work place though. Creating a farm/zoo atmosphere would surely be counter productive. If a reasonable quantity can be reached it could be a productive measure for a variety of work places.
